Oil Boilers

Oil Boilers use heating oil as fuel instead of gas or electric in order to power central heating systems, provide hot water and even in some cases cooking. Typically, homes in rural areas use oil boilers as they are not connected to the UK’s national gas network. Oil boilers work through igniting heating oil, which then heats the water that either circulates the property via a central heating system or is delivered to taps and other water outlets.

At Chris Evans Plumbing and Heating, our OFTEC accredited engineers can install, replace and service any oil boilers on your property. If you are interested in a FREE quote then please call us now or request a call back!

Manufacturers recommend that most oil boilers are inspected and serviced annually by OFTEC registered engineers. There are several reasons for this, including ensuring that the boiler is working safely, early detections of faults or required part replacements, adhering to manufacturers’ warranty obligations and finally, to minimise the risk of oil leaks which can be harmful to the surrounding environment or damage your property.

At Chris Evans Plumbing and Heating, the most common problem we solve with our oil boiler inspection service is cleaning out the soot left behind from burning heating oil. Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of oil boilers?

It is estimated that around 1.6 million households in the UK use heating oil in order to power their central heating systems, provide hot water or in some cases cooking. Heating oil is the fuel of choice for many properties due to their location, which is typically off the UK’s gas pipe infrastructure.

However, beyond the convenience and accessibility of using oil systems, there are many other benefits. Heating oil burns at a higher temperature than gas, which makes it more effective to heat areas faster without using as much fuel. In addition to this, heating oil is the second cheapest fuel source behind gas (5.5pence per kWh vs. 5.1 pence per kWh), and far cheaper than electricity (20.7 pence per kWh) according to data from NottEnergy in 2019.

The combination of the cheap price and the efficiency of heating oil as a fuel is then backed up by the boiler technology that exists. Oil boilers in full working order can have a running efficiency of 90%, in comparison to gas systems as 75% and electric at 30%.

Another advantage is that the cost of heating oil is not fixed and you don’t have to stick to one supplier. Heating oil prices fluctuate which can be good or bad. However, the freedom to select a provider each time you fill up means that you can shop around for the best price. Alternatively, you wanted to stick to a monthly bill, you can also select to do this. Most heating oil providers supply a pay monthly option which ties you into receiving an agreed amount of heating oil for a set price.

What are the disadvantages of oil tanks?

Typically, you would be using a heating oil system as the location of your property is not on the main gas supply line and the alternative of an electric system may not be as cost-efficient. Below we have outlined a few drawbacks to using heating oil as the main fuel source for your property.

The fluctuation in heating oil prices can be both an advantage and disadvantage depending on which way the prices are going. There is the added benefit of not being locked into one provider, however, shopping around for a better deal can be time-consuming making any small money savings redundant.

Another possible drawback is that there needs to be accessibility to your property for the oil tankers to deliver heating oil. These tankers will fill up an external oil tank, which then feeds oil to your boiler system when required. The need to be home upon delivery can also be an inconvenience, however, if you use a regular supplier then arrangements can be made for independent refilling.

Finally, the last potential drawback of using heating oil is that it is a fossil fuel and therefore a non-renewable fuel. Saying this, the technology around the extraction of oil and now the efficiency of boiler systems when using oil has led to more sustainable usage of global stocks.
