Underfloor Heating Installation

Project Type

Underfloor Heating Installation

Work Duration

2 Weeks

Shrewsbury, Shropshire

This project came via a contractor who we frequently work with on plumbing and heating in construction projects in Shropshire and Mid Wales. The builder was about to begin an extension project to add a new kitchen and dining area to the property and wanted our assistance to install a new underfloor heating system and connect it to the existing boiler system.

We received the floor plans for the proposed extension and working with our underfloor heating supplier in Sheffield, we assessed the best underfloor heating system to install and calculated the correct dimensions. Next, we visited the property in Shrewsbury and planned the installation of the underfloor heating around the contractor’s schedule and set a date.

The manifold for the underfloor heating was installed in the office and we ran 22mm copper flow and return pipework back to the combination boiler upstairs. To allow the property owner full control over the radiators and the underfloor system we fitted an S-plan system that uses two zone valves to separate radiators and the underfloor system. We also included a bypass valve to protect the pump if both valves are shut and the pump overruns.

After the Underfloor Heating System Installation, we worked with the builders to pour over the 40mm liquid screed. At this point, we allowed the screed to dry before allowing a low level of heat to begin flowing through the system. This was followed by gradual increases in the temperature flowing through the system over the next few weeks in order to ensure the flooring has time to fully set. Once our work was completed, we left the property site in Shrewsbury and allowed the builders to fitted the Karndean flooring and kitchen units. Finally, we revisited the property in order to test the efficiency of the underfloor heating system and ensure that it is fully working through the extensive OFTEC commissioning process.

By the end of the project, we laid 800 meters of pipework clipped to 100mm of insulation, with a liquid screed of 40mm poured over once complete. Due to our extensive planning, the underfloor heating installation only took 14 days and allowed the builder to continue working on the extension at the same time.
